Australia's Richest Person Ordered to Share Mining Fortunes by Court

The high-profile dispute centered on Rinehart's inherited iron ore ventures in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The Supreme Court judge ruled that an agreement between Rinehart's father, Lang Hancock, and his business partner, Peter Wright, entitled Wright's heirs to a significant share of royalties. Specifically, half of the 2.5% royalties paid by global mining giant Rio Tinto to Hancock Prospecting from the Hope Downs project will now go to the Wright family.

During the 51-day trial in 2023, Wright's children argued Rinehart breached the original agreement. While the Wright family secured a portion of the royalties, Rinehart's ownership of the mining rights for Hope Downs was confirmed. Claims by two of Rinehart's own children, Bianca Rinehart and John Hancock, regarding mining rights were denied, though another bid for royalties from the family of late engineer Don Rhodes was partially granted.
